BIO
American Whale plays original music in and around Dayton, Ohio. Their expansive vision of poetic, heartland folk-rock earned them a Finalist spot in the 2025 Dayton Battle of the Bands the Brightside Music Venue (as the Simon Fink Band), where they were hailed by the judging panel for their “great songs” and for “play(ing) the room perfectly.”
Simon Fink is a composer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. His music has been called “delicate, intriguing, shadowy, (and) suddenly new” (NPR); “refreshing” (The Kansas City Star); and “haunting and literate” (David Anderson, The Hank Williams Reader). His music has received honors from the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Academy of Arts and Letters, and the MacDowell Colony. For many years he led the folk/bluegrass band, Under the Big Oak Tree (Mudstomp Records) in the Kansas City area. His book/album (with visual artist Benjamin Parks) Lullabies Till Dawn, explores early fatherhood, music, and sleep deprivation and garnered awards from ArtsKC and Artist Inc. He has shared bills with artists such as Wayne Hancock, Charlie Crockett, and Lydia Loveless, and performed at festivals including Folk Alliance’s International Folk Fest, The Crossroads Music Festival (KC), and the Nebraska Folk and Roots Festival.

“Fink’s playing (is) crisp and pure, and so is his voice, a gentle
tenor with a built-in, intriguing whisper.”
— Mike Warren, KCUR 89.3 FM“Sweet on the ears.”
— Madison Ward (Madison Ward and the Mama Bear)
“American music in its purest, sweetest, and most engaging
form.”
— Vinny, WHUS 91.7 FM
